Car immobilisers are electronic security devices designed and installed to stop the engine from running unless the specific transponder car key is nearby. They have been successful in reducing incidents of vehicle theft as they prevent vehicles from being hotwired.

THERE ARE TWO MAIN TYPES OF IMMOBILISERS:
- Touch key immobiliser: The coded key must be ‘touched’ or placed into a holder designed to receive it. When the key is placed in the holder, the alarm is automatically disarmed and the engine can be started.
- Transponder immobiliser: The fob contains a coded chip that the transponder reads when the key is inserted into the ignition, and which disarms the alarm system.
